System Of A Down melden sich erstmals nach 15 Jahren mit neuer Musik zurück

Wir sind freitags ja hin und wieder Überraschungen der besonderen Art gewohnt. Immerhin ist Release Day. Doch mit derartigen Neuigkeiten von System Of A Down haben wir bei aller Liebe am heutigen Freitag NICHT gerechnet.

Völlig überraschend meldet sich die Band um Frontmann Serj Tankian mit gleich zwei neuen Songs znamens „Protect The Land“ und „Genocidal Humanozid“ zurück und das trotz internen Meinungsverschiedenheiten in der zuletzt aktiven Besetzung, die neben Tankian aus Gitarrist Daron Malakian, Bassist Shavo Odadjian sowie Schlagzeuger John Dolmayan besteht. Vor allem letzterer fiel zuletzt als Trump-Supporter durch eine eher gegensätzliche politische Einstellungen zu der seiner Kollegen auf.

System Of A Down veröffentlichen erstmals seit 15 Jahren neue Musik

Die Thematik der beiden Songs dreht sich einmal mehr um die gesellschaftlichen und politischen Unruhen in Armenien und Arzach, den beiden Staaten, in denen die Bandmitglieder ihre Wurzeln haben, und dem Krieg zwischen Arzach und Aserbaidschan. Sie rufen dazu auf, die Songs über Bandcamp.com zu erwerben, da die Einnahmen aus den Erlösen hier allesamt gesependet werden. Dazu sagte die Kombo:

[…] There is an immediate need for global citizens to urge their respective governments to not only condemn the actions of the corrupt regime leaders of Azerbaijan and Turkey, but to also insist world leaders act with urgency to bring peace to the region and rightfully recognize Artsakh as the independent nation it is. The current corrupt regimes of Aliyev in Azerbaijan and Erdogan in Turkey not only want to claim Artsakh and Armenia as their own, but are committing genocidal acts with impunity on humanity and wildlife to achieve their mission. They are banking on the world being too distracted with COVID, elections and civil unrest to call out their atrocities. They have the bankroll, the resources and have recruited massive public relations firms to spin the truth and conceal their barbaric objective of genocide. Between these two dictatorships, there’s a lot of disinformation and silencing of voices within their own countries. Freedom of speech is not something that is enjoyed by everyone, but it is enjoyed here, so part of that responsibility is getting the truth out there whenever possible. We’re here to protect our land, to protect our culture, and to protect our nation. This is not the time to turn a blind eye. Hört jetzt die beiden neuen Songs „Protect The Land“ and „Genocidal Humanoidz“ von SOAD

Wie es um weitere Musik steht, ist völlig unklar. Die Bandmitglieder betonen in einzelnen Statements, dass sie die Songs für die Message dahiner veröffentlicht haben und nicht für ihren Profit. Serj Tankian kommentierte: „I’m not doing this as an artist for myself or for System Of A Down or for any of the guys in the band; we’re all doing this for our people. So this is not a creative decision, this is not a business decision. This is a decision of activism, and that takes precedence over all other things for us.“

Bassist Shavo ergänzt: „This was something that was bigger than any issue we’ve ever had with System. We had to put everything away and say, ‘We’ve got to get together because, when we speak after 15 years, people will listen.’ People will be like, ‘Whoa, these guys came back? For what?‘ […] I’m proud that we did this. I wish we could get in and do more. Maybe this could lead to that, maybe it can’t. I’ve always been optimistic, though.“

Zuletzt brachten System Of A Down 2005 ihre beiden Alben „Mezmerize“ und „Hypnotize“ auf den Markt. Kommendes Jahr kommen wir zumindest in den Genuss von zwei Performances bei Rock am Ring und Rock im Park. Die Headliner-Show, die zusätzlich für dieses Jahr angesetzt war, fällt zunächst gänzlich aus. Ob es 2021 Ersatz geben wird, ist noch nicht klar.
