2018 wurde in Seattle, der Heimatstadt des ehemaligen Soundgarden-Frontmanns Chris Cornell, eine Statue zu seinen Ehren enthüllt. Vandalisten beschädigten diese nun mutwillig.
Mehrere US-Medien teilten Bilder, auf denen es aussieht, als sei die Statue mit weißer Farbe besprüht worden.
Ob es Hinweise zu den Personen gibt, die die Statue beschädigt haben, ist bislang noch nicht bekannt. Cornells Frau Vicky zeigte sich bestürzt über die pietätlose Aktion.
„My children and I are heartbroken to learn of the vandalization of Chris’s statue at the Museum of Pop Culture in Seattle. The statue is not only a work of art but a tribute to Chris, his incomparable musical legacy and everything that he stood for. It represents Chris, who is beloved not only in Seattle, but worldwide. In the face of this hate and destruction, we are thankful once again to the fans who stood up to support him and showed such immense love. It lifted our hearts to hear that fans brought supplies and attempted to clean up the heartbreaking vandalism.“ The statue will be restored. Hate will not win. Chris is Seattle’s Son!“

Der ehemalige Soundgarden-Sänger verstarb vor über drei Jahren. Im Juli wurde anlässlich seines Geburtstags eine Cover-Version des Guns N‘ Roses-Songs „Patience“ veröffentlicht.
Chris Cornell war als Gründungsmitglied von 1984 bis zu seinem Tod 2017 Teil von Soundgarden. Mit der Band brachte er sechs Studioalben auf den Markt, zuletzt 2012 die LP „King Animal“. Kurz nach seinem Tod verkündete die Band ebenfalls ihr Ende.
Darüber hinaus war Cornell auch solo sowie bei Audioslave tätig.
