David Hasselhoff: „Ich liebe Rock N‘ Roll. Ich liebe harte Musik“

Schauspieler und Musiker David Hasselhoff überraschte erst vor kurzem die Metal-Welt mit einem besonderen Song. Gemeinsam mit der Band CueStack veröffentlichte „The Hoff“ das Stück „Through The Night“.

In einer neuen Episode des „Side Jams With Bryan Reesman“ Podcast sprach der Allrounder nun einmal mehr über seine Liebe zu Rock und Metal. Demnach sei es für ihn eine absolute Ehre gewesen, 2014 auf dem Nova Rock Festival in Österreich gemeinsam mit Bands wie Iron Maiden und Metallica gespielt zu haben – und das sogar NACH diesen Bands.

„We do these massive concerts anywhere from 65,000 people — I’m doing one on my birthday which is an ’80s concert — to Nova Rock festival where I come on 11:30 to 12:15,“ Hasselhoff told „Side Jams“. „They told me I can’t do more than 70 minutes, and then I went on following IRON MAIDEN. ‚Following IRON MAIDEN?!? They’re going to leave!‘ And they didn’t leave. As a matter of fact, they came from different stages, kind of like Coachella, to see what I was doing. It’s humbling. And it’s amazing when you go to Norway, and they start chanting ‚Hoff, Hoff, Hoff.‘ Sometimes the longest I’ve had was eight minutes. I mean, eight minutes is a long time. I just stood there, and at first I got emotional. Then I got kind of not annoyed, but ‚come on, let’s get on with the show type attitude‘. I look back…and I go, ‚Wow, I have done a lot.‘ And I don’t realize it.“

Die Idee, plötzlich Metal zu machen, sei aus einer Abmachung mit Marin Kames entstanden, der die Backdrops für die Konzerte von Hasselhoff gestaltet. Er selbst fad die Idee gut, denn er sei ein Fan von Metal und liebe harte Musik.

“ Martin [Kames] had done my [concert] backdrops, and he had done such a great job. He said in exchange for something that he did that we should do this heavy metal song because ‚we’re trying to get into heavy metal because that’s what we do.‘ And I liked it. I liked the song. I liked Bernth [the guitarist]. I call him Mr. B. We ended up doing that as a basically a labor of love to tip the hat to the heavy metal crowd, and then I found out I had a heavy metal audience which is bizarre. They would come in because they would listen to ‚True Survivor‘ [from the ‚Kung Fury‘ movie soundtrack]. It’s kind of heavy metal. It’s followed by a heavy metal crowd. It’s weird. I’ll look around the audience and see girls, guys dressed up as David Hasselhoff, and people getting hammered. And then I will see a heavy metal crowd. Give me the heavy metal side with weird hair and weird clothes. I go, ‚Wow, that’s really cool.‘ Because I’m a fan of METALLICA, because I’m a fan of IRON MAIDEN, because I’ve listened to this rock and roll, the good stuff. I’m not a heavy metal aficionado. There’s absolutely no way, but I liked the song. I like the rock and roll. I like the hard music.“

„Through The Night“ war nicht der erste Ausflug von David Hasselhoff in die metallische Musiklandschaft. Schon für sein aktuelles Album „Open Your Eyes“ schnappte er sich Unterstützung von Ministry-Frontmann Al Jourgensen.

Seit 1985 ist er neben seiner schauspielerischen Tätigkeit auch als Musiker unterwegs und veröffentlichte diverse Platten. Kultstatus in der Musikszene erlangte er unter anderem durch seinen Song „Looking For Freedom“ von 1988. Aus Film und Fernsehen ist er unter anderem aus „Baywatch“, „Knight Rider“ und mehr bekannt.
